Breakthrough Long Island is proudly part of a national collaborative aspiring to reshape the face of education. As one of the 26 national Breakthrough/Summerbridge sites, Breakthrough Long Island serves a community comprised of over 100 bright and motivated middle school students, high school leaders and college student-teachers.

Breakthrough Long Island, hosted by Friends Academy, is a six-week academically enriching and stimulating summer program, complemented by a school-year program that meets 2-3 Saturdays a month. The summer and school-year programs provide our students with a head start for the upcoming school year, accompanied by family workshops, cultural trips, study skills workshops, college visits, high school and college counseling, test prep, spirit-packed events and much more.

We aim to enrich the lives of our students holistically at the onset of their critical middle school years. Our "Breakthrough" approach to interactive and innovative teaching facilitates our mission. When accepted into the Breakthrough program, our students commit themselves to a six-year membership into a community like no other.

What makes Breakthrough so unique? When students teach students, everyone celebrates being smart and remembers that learning can be a lot of fun!

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q: Who are Breakthrough students?
A: Breakthrough students are motivated middle and high school students who attend school districts throughout Nassau County. Breakthrough students desire a challenging academic experience that will help to shape their future academic endeavors.

Q: When can a student begin participating with Breakthrough?
A: Students must apply to Breakthrough during the fall semester of their 6th grade year. Generally, applications are available in October and are due by January 1. Once we've received all materials by the designated deadline, we will invite both the student and their parents for an interview. We typically mail out letters of notification by the first week of April.

Q: I have a child who would like to volunteer at Breakthrough, is that possible?
A: Absolutely! Our volunteers are high school students who wish to get involved in the nonprofit world. There are two ways to get involved with our program. Students can volunteer during our summer session as teacher assistants. As a teacher assistant your tasks consist of helping a cohort of teachers with classroom projects and student activities. Another way to get involved is by teaching a course during our Saturday School sessions, which typically start in October.

Q: How can I learn more about the program?
A: Our website provides an array of information pertaining to different facets of our program. Also, you may fill out a request form for additional information.

Q: Who teaches students during the summer and school year program?
A: During the summer students are taught by talented college students from across the nation. High school students are welcomed to teach during our Saturday School session in the Fall and Spring.

Q: What happens once a student completes the Middle School portion of the program?
A: Breakthrough is a six year program. Once students are admitted into the program, they are committed to our program until their senior year of high school.

Q: How much does it cost to attend the program?
A: Breakthrough is a tuition free program. We provide our students with free transportation and lunch meals.
