Q: Who are Breakthrough students?
A: Breakthrough students are motivated middle and high school students who attend school districts throughout Nassau County. Breakthrough students desire a challenging academic experience that will help to shape their future academic endeavors.
Q: When can a student begin participating with Breakthrough?
A: Students must apply to Breakthrough during the fall semester of their 6th grade year. Generally, applications are available in October and are due by January 1. Once we've received all materials by the designated deadline, we will invite both the student and their parents for an interview. We typically mail out letters of notification by the first week of April.
Q: I have a child who would like to volunteer at Breakthrough, is that possible?
A: Absolutely! Our volunteers are high school students who wish to get involved in the nonprofit world. There are two ways to get involved with our program. Students can volunteer during our summer session as teacher assistants. As a teacher assistant your tasks consist of helping a cohort of teachers with classroom projects and student activities. Another way to get involved is by teaching a course during our Saturday School sessions, which typically start in October.
